tv   Weekends With Alex Witt  MSNBC  November 28, 2015 4:00am-5:01am PST

4:00 am
good morning, everyone. welcome to "weekends with alex witt." it remains a mystery at this hour. one big unanswered question in that killing spree at a colorado springs planned parenthood office. we're going to hear from the witness to the incident in the latest from police. no apparent get-away vehicle or weapon. then how did a man walk away from the armored car carrying away half a million dollars but there is more to this story. the road home. some treacherous conditions expected this weekend just in time for your trip returning from holiday. we'll tell you where and when to expect trouble. and some of the numbers are staggering. the ups and downs of what could
4:01 am
be a record setting weekend for retailers. and we begin this morning on that developing story out of colorado. no word from police on a motive for a shooting spree at a colorado springs planned parenthood clinic. three people died in the attack, but here's what we do know. one police officer and two civilians were killed in the five-hour shoot-out and standoff. the alleged gunman is in custody. nine people including five police officers were wounded. all nine are hospitalized though in good condition at this hour. gun fire was first reported just before noon colorado time. police were still clearing the building as of friday night. some were able to escape when a police vehicle rammed through the side of the building. officers described being pinned down by gun fire and one witness who was slightly wounded described the ordeal. >> i could see his face, he wasn't a young man.
4:02 am
he was a white male. he was wearing tan or gray. and his gun seemed small. it didn't look like -- it didn't sound like an automatic weapon because he could have finished me off there. like two seconds between each shot. >> msnbc's leanne greggs has more. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: good morning, alex. police are continuing to investigate the crime scene. they say it's a complicated scene. they're trying to learn more about the gunman, 57-year-old robert lewis deere. federal officials tell us he appears to be mental disturbed. they still don't know what motivated him to open fire on black friday at this busy strip mall. colorado springs police say a gunman who stormed a planned parenthood office has been captured alive. but not before killing at least three people including officer garrett swasey.
4:03 am
>> this is a terrible tragedy that's occurred here in colorado springs today. obviously, we're -- we mourn the loss of the two civilian victims. we mourn the loss of a very brave police officer. >> reporter: the end came nearly five hours after it started. teams of heavily armed tactical police rushed the scene. a shopping center where they confronted the shooter and the standoff began with the suspect and police firing at each other over the course of several hours. >> we're pinned down. >> reporter: five other officers were wounded with five people in all taken to nearby hospitals. >> we say a lot of individual acts of bravery today and a lot of bravery as a team. it was amazing how law enforcement and first responders came together today. worked very well and efficiently today. but it's still a horrible tragedy. >> reporter: miss say the gunman was armed with an ak-47. his motive is not yet known.
4:04 am
and earlier this morning, the bodies of the three victims were removed from the crime scene. during that time, the officers lined the streets and saluted as the vehicles drove by. it's a very difficult time for this entire community. they'll have a chance to mourn together later today during two separate vigils. one this morning at a local church and another at a nearby university this evening. >> all right, thank you so much. let's get some perspective on the attack. from nbc news law enforcement analyst jim cavanaugh. a former atf agent in charge and from the national abortion federation. this standoff lasted for hours. why did it take so long to resolve? >> of course the s.w.a.t. team has to get there, get their forces ready. they have to find out where the gunman is. that planned parenthood building is kind of a separate building it looks like from the photographs we have seen.
4:05 am
the official response of the patrol officers is what saved a lot of lives and i worked with a lot of the clippics when we -- clinics when they had bombing and arsenic attacks and they had protocol as well. i wouldn't be surprised they didn't lock doors inside and you had patrol officers who took a lot of gun fire. maybe security activity inside. he got hemmed in at least some part of the building while swat came in and got ready and tried to locate them with their scopes. binoculars and drove their bearcat through the wall and entered the building. >> our witnesses from inside said doors were definitely locked. vicki, do you know if there were any specific threats against this planned parenthood clinic? >> well, since the -- these videos appeared this summer, there has been an unprecedented escalation in hate speech and threats against abortion providers. and this affiliate of planned parenthood was featured in one of those videotapes.
4:06 am
and they had protesters and they have had threats against them as have so many abortion providers throughout the country. >> so vicki then, what kind of security in general is in place at these women's care facilities and was there anything special about this particular clinic in terms of security? >> unfortunately, abortion providers have to have security that isn't common for other health care providers. and so many have bulletproof glass and special entry systems and cameras and lights and all kinds of special precautions. and the staff at this particular facility acted quickly, acted well, protected their patients, put them in safe rooms and acted with great speed and
4:07 am
professionalism. >> you mentioned the safe room. indeed there was one there. that's where some of the eyewitnesses and those inside gather and huddled for safety. look, jim, we don't know the motivation behind this attack yet, but we do know that the shooter was a 57-year-old man. he's from north carolina. can we infer anything about his motives from his personal details or the way he carried out this attack? it was an assault. >> sometimes we want to jump on the mental health issues as an excuse for violent murder and crime. it's not always the case. sometimes those are present as well, but motivations directly against the clinic could be afoot. we have had 40 years more -- 45 years of attacks on clinics, murders, burnings, arson. like the leader of the organization told you it's ramped up lately and this gins up people to do things. they want to hurt and kill and murder people. eric rudolph murdered a birmingham police officer. my office was a few blocks from the clinic when he did that.
4:08 am
in birmingham, he was a security -- he worked the second job as security. he was in uniform when he died and rudolph intentionally murdered him. there are vicious people and we have a brave officer who gave his life. two people we don't know if they were clients or employees there. it's a horrible case. of course this guy, there's so much proof against the guy he's certain to be convicted of this crime. he's caught in the clinic, shooting at everybody. eyewitnesses, videotapes. he'll go to prison for the rest of his life or maybe the death penalty depending on how the charges go. it doesn't bring back the victim, the brave police officer. it doesn't make us feel more secure necessarily. sometimes justice is a bitter pill. >> thank you for weighing in. we'll hear from a woman inside that colorado clinic and came face to face with the shooter.
4:09 am
you will hear how she described the attacker. the other big story of the day -- the weather. freezing rain and flooding in parts of the central u.s. expected to get worse throughout this weekend. at least three people have died in fast moving floodwaters in texas and swift waters are preventing teams from searching for an elderly woman who went missing after a flash flood swept her car from the bridge. let's turn to our very busy meteorologist, bonnie schneider. how do things look now? >> of course, the timing isn't good, alex, everyone is traveling. this is the way it looks right now across the plains. we have 23 degrees in amarillo, texas. 31 in oklahoma city. 51 in shreveport and 65 up into jackson. looking at really, really warm numbers as we go through much of the region for this part of the country. now looking back, this is where we have the ice that we're watching very closely. you can see ice developing right here through oklahoma city. there's an ice storm warning in effect for this region. and then to the south, we're
4:10 am
looking at some really heavy rain. so so dallas you're watching out for flooding. we're looking at live pictures. i believe this is texas where we're facing quite a bit of rain. you can see people getting to where they need to go. unfortunately the position of the weather is not changing. the ice will continue through the lunch hour, through oklahoma city. temperatures are still pretty cold behind it. much colder air filtering in as well and warmer air to the south. the main thing to notice if you're driving on i-35 or i-40, you're going to see changing conditions throughout the day. meaning snow, sleet, rain, and even flooding. we'll be watching for dallas especially. so interesting that dallas already has had its wettest year on record. so to have another inundation of rain on a holiday weekend really is making for a rough go of it for holiday travel. >> yeah, kind of insult to injury. thank you so much. see you next half hour. other news now, police are trying to figure out how a man walked up to an armored car and
4:11 am
walked away with $500,000 and it happened in detroit yesterday morning. police say the armored van was parked near a casino when the man dressed in a guards union approached the vehicle. an employee opened the door and he took more than half a million dollars. police say it doesn't appear that the robbery had a get away vehicle or used a weapon. and take a look at this. dash cam video from the connecticut state trooper's cruiser captures that moment that a car comes out of nowhere and slams into the car on the side of the highway. it was going 80 miles per hour and just missing that trooper and two people on the side of the highway. the police arrested the 21-year-old driver who faces reckless driving and failure to maintain a lane. more than a million people came to see pope francis in uganda this morning. he was honoring 22 catholic martyrs who was killed on the

in chicago, police are intensifying their manhunt for a third suspect wanted in connection with the shooting death of 9-year-old tyshawn lee. police say kevin edwards played a role in the retaliation killing of the boy earlier this month. another suspect, 27-year-old corey morgan was arrested yesterday, charged with first degree murder. msnbc's adam reese has more. what more are you learning about the night that tyshawn was killed? >> good morning. police say tyshawn was essentially assassinated,
4:16 am
executed. that they lured him from a basketball court into an alleyway. this fourth grader solely for the purpose of murdering him. they shot him five times in the face and the back all because of his father's gang ties. they say morgan would walk around the neighborhood with the gun, seeking revenge for his brother's murder. here's what the superintendent had to say yesterday. >> it was an act of barbarism. the assassination of a 9-year-old child as a gang retaliation to get back at his father. tyshawn lee was failed on many, many levels. but at the end of the day, our detectives were unrelenting in the pursuit of justice. >> now police said he did not act alone, there are others. they haven't recovered gun. they have edwards and one other unidentified suspect and they're looking for a third. edwards. and they're going to get him,
4:17 am
they say, and they're going to decimate these gangs. they just say he'd be better off in police custody than out on the street. alex? >> i have to tell you, this is a tough one to stomach. what's been the reaction in the community? it seems to have been per vase it -- pervasive throughout chicago. >> chicago has seen its share of violent crime, but the police superintendent said this was absolutely unfathomable. he said it was an execution. it was an assassination. this fourth grader, 9-year-old boy, just -- it's unspeakable. alex? >> yeah. unspeakable indeed. thank you so much. let's go from there to politics now and gop front-runner donald trump still caught in controversy over remarks he made about a "new york times" reporter. he'll hold a rally today in sarasota, florida. the latest poll from iowa shows trump in the lead with 25%. just two points ahead of ted cruz. joining me now, abby phillip, reporter for the "washington
4:18 am
post." good saturday morning to you. thank you for joining me. so is there any clear truth -- i mean clear truth on donald trump's remarks about this "new york times" reporter? was he making fun of reporter's disabilitieser not? did he not know the reporter as he claims? >> there's more evidence that he did know the reporter. serge reported on trump for many years. he interviewed him in person. he has met him. and i'll let serge speak for himself. he says that there's no way that donald trump could have met him over those years and not have known about his disability. if you look at the video, i think people are looking at it right now, it's pretty clear that it wasn't just a flustered reporter that he was imitating. he was imitating something very specific. so i think people can be the judge of what donald trump was saying. but it clearly looks like he was talking about a specific person with a very specific disability. >> yeah. you have to also listen to what he was saying.
4:19 am
he was saying, look, the poor guy, as he was making these -- you know, disrespectful movements if indeed that's what he was targeting. >> right. i think everything points to the idea that donald trump knew exactly who he was talking about. he talked about it as if it was negative thing. and, you know, i think in the past, donald trump has often said that he didn't know people, that he did in fact know. or that he's claimed sort of plausible deniability. but i think this particular instance is a little bit beyond the pale for most people. >> it can't be mere coincidence he happens to put his mannerisms in the way that would be maybe reflective of the difficulties this reporter serge has had to deal with. let's go to ben carson. he's in jordan and meeting with syrian refugees. is this an part of an attempt to bolster his foreign policy creds? >> yeah, there's no question. i mean, ben carson has actually been really hurt by the
4:20 am
perception that he's not quite ready. that he doesn't understand foreign policy. and that perhaps he doesn't have an interest in it enough to become well versed in it. there were some harmful comments from his own aides to that effect, so this trip is about seeing the situation in person and hoping that that experience will hope deepen his understanding of the refugee crisis. but also bolster his own foreign policy credentials, which are basically nonexistent at this point. >> not an elected official, he's a neurosurgeon and doing politics now. let's talk about the quinnipiac poll in which it shows ted cruz surging to second in iowa. how surprising is this to you, and do you think it can hold? >> if you're in iowa it's not that surprising. ted cruz has spent a fair amount of time and quite a bit of money. i think he's actually spent more money than any other candidate in iowa. the key thing to remember about ted cruz in iowa is evangelical voters. his father if you remember is a
4:21 am
pastor. he really appeals to those voters. they're a huge segment of the electorate there and people like him. people are not surprised that cruz is rising quite this much. it remains to be seen whether he'll be able to do what no one else has been done which is overtake donald trump in that state. >> okay. we'll see. abby phillip from "the washington post," thank you. thank you. paper versus plastic. why shoppers are staying away from credit cards this year. that and more next. the twins. aunt alice... you didn't tell me aunt alice was coming. of course. don't forget grandpa. can the test drive be over now? maybe just head back to the dealership? don't you want to meet my family? yep, totally. it's practically yours, but we still need your signature. hurry in for great deals all black friday weekend on select new volkswagen models during the sign- then-drive event.

4:25 am
let's look at manic monday. we have the traditional online shopping frenzy though. that's already started. >> absolutely. this is really the olympics of retail and the next big event shall we say is indeed cyber monday. estimates are showing that folks are going to be spending about $3 billion which is up from last year of course. but let's be serious, alex. we're not in the early days of the internet with dialup and whatnot so online shopping isn't a novelty anymore. so the impact of cyber monday is not an impact, it's really cyber every day. shoppers will spend 60% of the money online, but starting on thursday and all the way through monday. so not just monday. 40% say they don't really rely on just cyber monday anyway. especially like they did before. so obviously, we don't know how much we'll be spending for the entire holiday shopping season. some estimates as we saw are saying $83 billion. some are saying $105 billion.
4:26 am
but, you know, fyi, the big toy this shopping season -- "star wars." it's the robot pets. it's the "star wars" droids. try saying that nine times fast. the movie isn't out, but those are the big sellers. >> okay. that does not surprise me in the least. how about give it to me, because it appears that people are shopping with themselves in mind. >> yeah, i know you're searching for a present for me, but i have got this covered. it is indeed the rise of the self-gifting. this year, especially. it's up a lot from last year and we're also spending more money on ourselves than our friends. about 130 bucks on ourselves which is up from last year. about 77 bucks on our friends. and about $25 for our co-workers. obviously, we give folks in the early morning control room more love. but i'm guilty of this already.
4:27 am
three-quarters of folks say they're taking advantage of the sales right now to gift for themselves. >> everyone in my control booth is saying you have to spend more than 25 on this. so paper or plastic. why are shoppers shunning credit cards? >> okay. so let me give you the stats first and then talk about the pros and cons. recent numbers have come out and showed us that most americans are using cash or debit for this holiday shopping season. almost 40% in cash. about 30% with debit. and only 20% using credit. so here are the pros and cons. with credit when you think of holiday shopping, as long as you pay it off quicker it's much safer to use than cash or debit. with the rise in google wallet, visa pay, where you can check out very quickly it's easier too. debit cards and cash on the other hand do limit your spending so it sort of keeps you
4:28 am
on budget. when the cash is gone, the party is over. on the flip side of course, they're more vulnerable to theft. so there you go. >> the pros and cons. shop as you will. shop responsibly. be safe out there. >> all good advice. nicole, thank you. >> thanks. still ahead, the security concerns in paris ahead of a global climate summit. what law enforcement is doing to keep everyone safe. sure, tv has evolved over the years.
4:29 am
it's gotten squarer. brighter. bigger.
4:30 am
it's gotten thinner. even curvier. but what's next? for all binge watchers. movie geeks. sports freaks. x1 from xfinity will change the way you experience tv.
4:31 am
welcome back to "weekends with alex witt." now the latest from colorado springs. police today have not yet indicated what motivated a lone gunman to open fire at a planned parenthood clinic. a police officer was among three people killed in the siege. nine others were wounded in the friday's attack. that standoff lasted five hours before the gunman surrendered to police. nbc's miguel almaguer is in colorado springs for us. have we learned anything about a positive motive? >> reporter: we don't know much about the motive, but we know
4:32 am
that the suspect has been identified as robert lewis deere. the 57-year-old appears to be mentally disturbed. he's the gunman that police say killed three people before surrendering. >> attention all units, an active shooter. >> reporter: when police arrived at planned parenthood in colorado springs, they were met by a hail of gun fire. >> we're pinned down. heading into active gun fire. >> reporter: the shooter who law enforcement sources say was armed with an ak-47 style rifle unloaded round after round into a busy shopping area on black friday. wounding nine, killing three. >> i've been shot. >> reporter: police took the brunt of the gun fire. five officers hospitalized. 44-year-old garrett swasey and two civilians among the dead. >> all i can say is my heart is broken. this is a really, really tough situation for a lot of people in
4:33 am
our community and the community at large. >> reporter: the standoff lasted five hours. hundreds inside surrounding businesses ordered to take cover. police evacuating the masses between sporadic, rapid volleys of gun fire. this man was caught in the cross fire. >> i could see him aiming. i was trying to move. it was horrible. i saw myself in the mirror and it was like my god he's aiming for my head. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams moved in, the gunman hunkered down inside planned parenthood with an unknown number of people also in the building. one patient took cover with others in a back room. >> you could actually hear the gunshots going off in planned parenthood. you could hear him breaking down the doors. >> reporter: with the sun setting, the gunman finally surrendered as police hauled him away for questioning the building was swept for explosives. the siege finally over, but not before three would lose their lives in a violent and terrifying standoff.
4:34 am
police say because of previous threats, the planned parenthood facility has a safe room with bulletproof vests inside. that room may have saved several lives and police said they used a closed circuit television system inside the planned parenthood to keep an eye on the suspect. he has a criminal history. as for the people who survived they're all in good condition. alex? >> extraordinary that police were able to watch his movements inside that building while that awful assault was under way. thank you so much, miguel almaguer. i'm joined by a woman who witnessed the attacks. thank you for being here. as i ask you to just recall what happened, what did you see? >> right when it first started, alex, what i recalled was the ladies in the front telling me to get down. from there i heard gunshots. when i looked out the window
4:35 am
from where i was standing at, i could see the gunman armed just shooting with no remorse. just at random. from there, i went -- i ran into the back room. tried to open a few door, they were locked. the one i actually ran into were two patients. actually, one was a nurse, and one was a patient. and they were -- they were unaware that there was a gunman on the scene. so from there, i let them know, hey, there's a gunman, everyone get down, get down. and then they started to hear the gunshots as well. and we barricaded, we grabbed the tables, put it in front of the door, sat in front of the doors and sat there for five hours. >> good grief. what did you do for five hours in that room? >> you don't want to know. but for the most part we were just -- we were all getting to know each other. keeping each other calm during that point in time. at one point we were saying what
4:36 am
we would do if he actually came into the room because we didn't have locks on our doors. all we had was the table itself that we had placed in front. so with that being said, we came up with plans on what he would do if we approached or is it possible that one of us can run down the hall since we were at the south end of planned parenthood where we could just randomly exit out to the s.w.a.t. team? we contemplated only trying to go up the ceiling and crawl across it, just to get out of the situation. >> yeah. >> at one point, when we were in the room, you could hear the gun fire -- bullets were in the wall, they came in the room, and you could see the gunpowder. >> you got a good look at him. can you describe him, what he looked like? >> yeah. it looked like he was wearing like a jacket that you would wear when you go hunting, you know, like the green camouflage jacket. he -- they said it wasn't a shotgun, but what i saw, what it
4:37 am
looked like from my angle was a gun that he was toting like this. he had hat on. and trimmed down little gray beard, almost a full beard. >> did he -- did he look like he knew what he was doing? i mean, there have been descriptions in the past that he was mentally disturbed. >> yes. >> did you get a sense of that? >> i did get a sense, like i said when he was shooting, he -- it looks like he goes hunting honestly. because the way he was holding the gun, he was calm. he was, you know, calm about the situation. as if it was like a gta game to him. but you would tell he was mentally untable because he was talking to himself. lips were mumbling, when -- i couldn't make out what he was saying, but, yeah. >> okay. i understand that you were there with your boyfriend. how did you get -- because you
4:38 am
got separated, right? >> yes. >> but you got out okay. how did you get out? >> i just -- i just ran and i ran to the nearest room. like him. he disappeared within 15 seconds prior to what happened. so i'm at this point in time, i don't know. all i know is that a part of me wanted to go out there to see if, you know, he was okay. because like said in the instant is when it had happened, but, you know, with them instructing me to go to the back and worrying about my own life, i didn't have the time. like i said it was so surreal to everyone. no one was expecting this to happen. no one was expecting it to happen. and even with the -- you know, with the people there when we first came there, there wasn't a lot of people there. >> yeah.
4:39 am
>> so -- >> well, you have been through a hell of a situation and hearts are going out to you. and you may have -- we may have lost the feed there, but thanks for telling your story and we're thinking about yourself. >> definitely, thank you, alex. >> good luck, sweetie, take care. well, another top story, you can see the snow flying there in colorado springs. there's a storm with rain and snow and ice that's affecting 20 million americans. freezing rain is the biggest concern in the texas panhandle and central oklahoma. that's where up to half an inch of ice is expected to accumulate. the ice warnings remain until noon their time today. shifting our focus to the attacks in paris and in the two weeks since the horrific assault there, french authorities have put 276 people under house arrest. another two dozen people have been put under house arrest recently because of the global climate talks which begin in paris on monday. nbc's gabe gutierrez is joining us from paris. good morning to you.
4:40 am
who are these individuals and what about them makes them a potential threat? >> reporter: hi, there, good afternoon from paris. alex, well, we -- french authority and belgium authorities have been reluctant to give details on the raids those under house arrests and we spoke to the lawyers of those under house arrests and she said they're climate change activists and this the government has put them under house arrest to keep them from demonstrating. of course there's been a state of emergency imposed here in france. public demonstrations are banned but that hasn't stopped somal protesters. a few nights ago, they're making their voices heard and they're concerned that large scale demonstrations on sunday and next week with this massive u.n. climate change could pose a problem for authorities as they try to clamp down on security. some 140 heads of state are expected here for this massive climate change conference which starts monday. alex? >> okay.
4:41 am
quickly, the government's able to do this because of the nationwide state of emergency, right? i mean, that's their legal -- i guess requisite for putting people under house arrest, right? >> right, in the state of emergency, it will be extend for several months and the government is saying they need to do this in order to stop any potential attacks in the future. there have been some critics here that say that france has given up civil liberties in exchange for public safety that's a debate going on here right now in france. but again, with this climate change conference, there's a lot of security, 120,000 troops and police officers have been deployed across france. here at the site just north of paris, about 3,000 troops and police officers alone. in the highways north and south of france leading into the city it will be shut down on sunday and public transportation even though it's friday on sunday and monday, police are asking people
4:42 am
not to use it. there's concern ahead of the massive climate change conference on monday. >> given all the global leader, you can understand why. gabe gutierrez, thank you from paris. today is an important day for from the small businesses. see what's at stake next. it's our day... to shop small at the places we love... with the people we love. for stuff we can't get anywhere else. and food that tastes like home. because the money we spend here... can help keep our town growing. today is small business saturday, let's all shop small. for the neighborhood, the town, the home we love. shop small today. i absolutely love my new but the rent is outrageous. good thing geico offers affordable renters insurance. with great coverage it protects my personal belongings should they get damaged, stolen or destroyed. resonating. last year, 88 million consumers shopped small on small business saturday which is up 15% from the previous year. joining me from los angeles, our own j.j. ramberg, host of "your business." good morning to you, my friend, out there in l.a. look, you have talked to so many small business owners on your show there. what are their hopes for small business saturday this year? >> you know what's amazing, as you were talking -- hi, alex, by the way, but you were talking about how black friday sales are going down. meanwhile, small business saturday awareness is going up. they did a survey recently and found that 55% of people know about small business saturday. which is incredible. you and i have been talking about this for years now. and what small business owners hope for is that people just come knocking. that people come through the doors and buy something today. >> yeah. look, at first it started as a big p.r. move, but you're right. i'm getting texts from my cousins and they're planning to go out. they're specifically going to small businesses. they want to do this.
4:47 am
it seems like everybody is on board. in part because the message has gotten out that the money that's spent locally, it has a better chance of staying local, right, compared to chain stores? >> exactly. a much larger percentage of that dollar stays local, if you spend it locally. and again, you and i talked about this last year. think about the stores that you love seeing on main street or in your neighborhood. people understand now, if you don't shop there, they're going to disappear. >> absolutely. so shopping small, it doesn't only apply to stores. you're talking about other businesses that can benefit from this too. we're looking at some examples here. restaurants and the like. >> right. exactly. our first thought is retail. when we think about shopping small. but think about the coffee shop, down the block. or that new gym that started that's not a chain store. shopping small is any small business that you can help support and keep alive. >> so in terms of the big chains, do they do anything to try to counter it?
4:48 am
are the big chains afraid of small business saturday at all? >> i have not heard anything around that. i mean, the big chains still look -- even though black friday isn't the big day, a lot of people shop at these big chain stores throughout this season and online. i think small business saturday is the day for really people to appreciate the small stores. i don't think any big chain is going to go out there and counter this. it would be pretty bad p.r. for them. >> we have to make a point though, that one day like this i mean that does not make an entire annual, you know, amount of money for -- you have to shop small businesses all the time. >> yeah, but i think what today does is it raises awareness for how important it is to shop small. obviously, you're going to shop the big chains for some things but there's some things that you want to go to your neighborhood stores for or small online shops for. today is the day to remember it and then think about it throughout the year. >> okay. j.j. ramberg, you'll have a big shopping day ahead of you.
